Matt Strutner joined SMG Knoxville in December 2017 as the Event Coordinator for all three Knoxville based SMG facilities– Knoxville Convention Center, Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum, and Chilhowee Park and Exposition Center.  He has since become an Event Manager and is responsible for coordinating service needs for events at Knoxville Convention Center.

Strutner is a member of Church Street United Methodist Church downtown. With a deep respect for veterans and our military community, he has served as an HonorAir Knoxville escort and continually seeks ways to honor East Tennessee’s veterans. In his spare time, he enjoys snowboarding, live sports and history.

How long have you lived in Knoxville?

I moved to the Knoxville area in the fall of 2006.

What is your favorite location in Knoxville?

Gay Street. It is exciting to track its transformation with each passing year – the new hotels, shops, bars and restaurants that complement our iconic, glowing Tennessee Theatre marquee. It is a pleasure to stroll down Gay Street, appreciate the historic architecture and get that vibrant “big city” feel.

What do you think sets Knoxville apart as a great city to visit?

The wide variety of entertainment options available, despite not being a major city. NCAA Division I athletic events, one of the largest and most impressive football stadiums in the country bordering a picturesque river, hockey games, concerts, plays, the Sunsphere, museums, street performers, food options to suit every taste, paddle boarding and kayaking, nature reserves, trails and greenways.

What is your favorite part about working at the Knoxville Convention Center?

We’re at the epicenter of what makes the city tick and we have the ability to make any group feel right at home with genuine hospitality and superior service.
